KPLC Prepaid Meter Application in Nairobi
Your Complete Step-by-Step Guide by Moffam Electricals
If you live in Nairobi or anywhere in Kenya, having a KPLC prepaid token meter gives you full control over your electricity usage. You only pay for the power you use, avoid unexpected bills, and can easily top up your meter from your phone.
In this detailed guide, Moffam Electricals explains everything you need to know about the KPLC prepaid meter application process — from requirements, documents, and costs to how to buy tokens after installation.
What Is a KPLC Prepaid Meter?
A KPLC prepaid meter, also known as a token meter, allows you to purchase electricity units in advance using M-Pesa, bank apps, or vendors. You then enter the token number into your meter to load electricity units.
This system helps homeowners and tenants monitor energy use, avoid overdue bills, and manage budgets efficiently. It’s now the standard system used for most residential and commercial connections by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).
Benefits of Using a Prepaid Meter
-
No monthly bills: You only buy what you use.
-
Better energy control: Monitor and manage your power consumption.
-
Easy top-up: Buy tokens anytime using your phone.
-
Transparency: Track your units and avoid surprise disconnections.
-
Standardization: Prepaid meters are approved and installed directly by KPLC.
Step 1: How to Apply for a KPLC Prepaid Meter in Nairobi
You can apply for a KPLC prepaid meter in two main ways:
Option 1 – Online Application (Recommended)
Kenya Power’s self-service portal allows customers to apply online. Here’s how:
-
Visit the official KPLC website at www.kplc.co.ke.
-
Go to “New Connections” or “Self-Service Portal”.
-
Fill in the online form with your personal details, property information, and wiring certificate details.
-
Upload the required documents (see below).
-
Submit your application and note your application reference number.
This method is faster and lets you track progress online.
Option 2 – Apply in Person
If you prefer physical submission, visit your nearest Kenya Power customer service office in Nairobi. Request the “Application for Supply of Electricity” form, fill it in, attach your documents, and hand it to the customer service desk.
Step 2: Required Documents for a KPLC Prepaid Meter Application
Before you start your KPLC application, prepare the following:
-
Copy of National ID or Passport (for the applicant)
-
KRA PIN Certificate
-
Proof of property ownership or tenancy — title deed, sale agreement, or lease/tenancy agreement
-
Consent letter from the landlord (if you’re a tenant)
-
Wiring Completion Certificate from a licensed electrical contractor
-
Electrical Contractor’s License Number
-
Site sketch or plan (for new or remote connections)
Pro Tip from Moffam Electricals:
KPLC will not connect your premises unless the wiring certificate is valid. We can inspect, test, and issue an approved wiring certificate to speed up your connection.
Step 3: Site Inspection and Quotation
Once you’ve submitted your application:
-
KPLC engineers conduct a site visit to inspect the property and assess wiring standards.
-
They determine whether a new service line, poles, or transformer is needed.
-
KPLC then issues a quotation detailing the total connection costs and payment instructions.
The quotation typically covers meter installation, service line, and other materials required to connect you to the grid.
Step 4: KPLC Connection Fees in Nairobi
The connection fees vary depending on several factors:
| Type of Connection | Average Cost (Estimate) |
|---|---|
| Single-phase (urban) | KSh 30,000 – 40,000 |
| Three-phase (commercial) | KSh 50,000 – 70,000 |
| Long-distance / rural connection | Quoted by KPLC after inspection |
Customers under the Last-Mile Connectivity Program may qualify for subsidized rates or installment payment options, usually around KSh 15,000, payable over time through the prepaid meter deductions.
Note: Always confirm your quotation directly from KPLC before payment. Prices may change depending on your location and the network extension required.
Step 5: Payment and Prepaid Meter Installation
Once you accept and pay the quoted amount:
-
KPLC schedules the installation date.
-
Technicians install your prepaid token meter and activate your connection.
-
You’ll receive a unique meter number used for purchasing tokens.
After installation, test the meter, ensure it’s functioning properly, and keep your installation receipt for future reference.
Step 6: How to Buy KPLC Tokens
Once your prepaid meter is installed, you can easily purchase tokens through multiple platforms.
1. M-Pesa (Most Common Method)
-
Go to Lipa na M-Pesa.
-
Select Pay Bill.
-
Enter Business Number: 888880.
-
Enter Account Number: Your KPLC prepaid meter number.
-
Enter the amount you want to spend (e.g., 500).
-
Confirm and complete the transaction.
You’ll receive an SMS with a 20-digit token number — key it into your meter to load units.
2. Bank Apps and USSD
Most Kenyan banks, including Equity, KCB, and Co-operative Bank, allow token purchases via mobile apps and USSD. Select “KPLC Prepaid” as the biller and enter your meter number.
3. Physical Vendors
You can also buy tokens at KPLC customer service centres or authorised vendors near you.
Step 7: Checking and Managing Your Tokens
To check your last token or units balance:
-
Press the meter’s display button to view balance.
-
For advanced functions, dial 977# on Safaricom and select “Prepaid Services” to check your last token purchased.
You can also retrieve your token from the Kenya Power online portal if the SMS fails.
